Ardbeg 10 vs Laphroaig 10: The Purifier That Splits Islay
There is a stretch of the south coast of Islay, about three miles long, where the sea works against the shore, and in the same way against three distilleries strung out along it in a row. Laphroaig sits closest to Port Ellen. Lagavulin is a mile east. Ardbeg is another mile beyond that. They share the same peat era in the ground and the same Atlantic salt in the wind. The two on the ends of that stretch also share a curious mirror-image relationship in the glass. Ardbeg is the more heavily peated. Laphroaig is the more medicinal. Ardbeg drinks lighter. Laphroaig drinks heavier. The peat numbers point one way; the mouth feels the other.
I was pouring them side by side at my kitchen table on a January evening that had already decided to be dark by four. For the life of me I could not remember which glass was which. Both had the sea in them. Both had that specific cold-campfire smell that means Islay before you can name it. And yet the difference, once I put my nose over each one, was unignorable. The Ardbeg was smoke with a lime cut through it, bright on top and clean on the exit. The Laphroaig was iodine and gauze bandage, thicker in the mouth, and it stayed on my tongue like it was reluctant to leave. Two whiskies from the same shore, made from the same peat era, aged in the same kind of American oak. Almost every input the same. One small pipe on one of the stills, different.

The two bottles, before the engineering
Ardbeg 10 is 46% ABV, non-chill-filtered, roughly £40–45 in the UK and $55–65 in the US. Laphroaig 10 is 40% ABV, £35–40 in the UK. Both are widely stocked. Both are among the small handful of peated Islays a beginner can reasonably start on without needing a bottle-swap party to escape.
Here is what I taste in each, and what I think each note is actually made of:
Ardbeg 10 — Lemon and lime lifted over cold ash on the nose, brine and oyster shell underneath, a flash of black pepper and creosote mid-palate, then a dry finish that closes without leaving an oily film. Laphroaig 10 — Antiseptic bandages and tincture-of-iodine on the nose, damp ash under that, and on the palate a startling arrival of vanilla and salted caramel before the medicinal notes come back in with a swagger. Smoked ham, gherkin brine, wet grass, an oily coat that clings to the roof of your mouth. Long on smoke and on weight. A first-aid kit that has been left in the sea. (Master of Malt tasting notes)
The Ardbeg has been peated harder. The Laphroaig feels heavier. That inversion is the whole subject.
Same peat, different plumbing
The peat inputs are close, but not identical. Ardbeg malts to somewhere around 50–55 ppm phenols, generally accepted as the highest in-malt phenol level of any Islay production distillery. That puts it above Laphroaig and Lagavulin both. Laphroaig sits at an overall average of roughly 40 ppm, blended from two streams. About 20% comes off Laphroaig’s own floor maltings and is peated to 40–60 ppm. The remaining 80% is bought from the Port Ellen Maltings four miles up the coast at a 35–45 ppm spec. (Whiskipedia — Laphroaig) So Ardbeg starts with about a third more phenolic load than Laphroaig. On paper it should be the heavier, more medicinal drink. It isn’t.
The reason is what happens next, in the stillhouse. Both distilleries use pot stills. Both give the spirit two full distillations. Both mature primarily in ex-bourbon oak: Ardbeg in first-fill and refill American oak, Laphroaig famously in ex-Maker’s Mark barrels. Ardbeg has a purifier. A small copper pot is slung on the underside of the lyne arm (the tube that runs from the top of the still to the condenser), with a three-inch return pipe dropping condensed heavy vapour back into the still to be boiled a second time. It is not water-cooled; it relies on ambient heat loss to pick off the heaviest fraction. What passes through are the light, volatile compounds, including most of the phenols, which happen to be relatively volatile despite their smoke reputation. What gets sent back are the heavy oils, fatty esters, and sulfur compounds. The purifier sorts by weight, and it happens that smoke is light and grease is heavy. Laphroaig has no purifier. What it has instead is an unusually long foreshot cut: about 45 minutes at the start of every spirit run, versus an industry standard of 10–15 minutes, during which the earliest and most volatile fraction is diverted away before the middle cut is collected. The lyne arms angle steeply upward, which encourages some passive reflux, but there is no active return of heavy vapour. What condenses in the condenser is what goes into the cask. The consequence: Ardbeg pushes more smoke into the malt and then filters more weight out of the spirit. Laphroaig pushes less smoke in and lets more weight through. The two levers cancel in opposite directions and produce a result that looks paradoxical on the ppm chart: the higher-peated whisky is the lighter drink, and the lower-peated whisky is the heavier one. The purifier is what does most of the cancelling.
There is a subtler consequence too, in which phenolic compounds survive to the bottle. Phenol, cresol, and guaiacol have different volatilities, and a purifier’s re-boil discriminates against the heavier ones. Cresols (the p-cresol especially) carry much of the medicinal, sticking-plaster, disinfectant note. Guaiacol carries the earthy-clove-campfire note. Phenol itself carries the iodine-and-TCP quality. (Whisky Magazine on phenolic compounds) Ardbeg’s spirit, sorted for volatility, ends up guaiacol-forward: earthy smoke, clean edge. Laphroaig’s, less sorted, keeps the heavier cresol and phenol fractions in play — hence the bandage, the iodine, the medicine cabinet in a glass. Ardbeg’s decision: Mickey Heads and the pipe kept alone
Ardbeg spent the 1980s dark and the early 1990s mothballed. The distillery was rescued in 1997 by the Glenmorangie company, which restarted it. Reopening a silent distillery is the one moment when you genuinely could re-spec the stills, remove the purifier, chase yield, chase weight. Ardbeg did not. The pipe stayed exactly where it had been for the previous century.
The man who ran the place through its modern peak was Mickey Heads, who took over as distillery manager in 2007 and retired in October 2020 after thirteen years. (Whisky Magazine on Heads’ retirement) Heads was Islay-and-Jura native. He had spent his working life on the islands, which on landmasses that small means the spirit was effectively his first language rather than something he had to be taught. Under him Ardbeg was named Distillery of the Year three years running, from 2018 to 2020.
The decision Heads is in the bottle for is the invisible one. Every spirit run is a chance to second-guess the purifier: to ask whether the yield you lose by sending heavy vapour back for a re-boil is worth it, whether you could make a heavier, arguably more fashionable Islay by easing off the reflux. His job, day after day for thirteen years, was to be the person who said no. The small pipe on the underside of the lyne arm re-boils the fat while letting the smoke through. That mechanism was inherited from earlier decades, not invented on his shift, and Heads decided over and over again that it was worth the lost yield. He handed over in 2020 to Colin Gordon, who came across from Lagavulin. The pipe is still there. So is the direction Heads spent thirteen years protecting.
Laphroaig’s decision: Bessie Williamson and the malting floors kept
Laphroaig’s analogue is stranger, older, and easier to miss because it happened on a longer clock. The equivalent decision is not about a pipe. It is about a room. Laphroaig is one of the very small handful of Scotch distilleries that still floor-malts a proportion of its own barley in-house, in the traditional way, on a slate floor spread with germinating grain that a maltman turns by hand every eight hours. Not for the whole grist — about 20%. But that 20% is what pins the identity: it is peated to 40–60 ppm using peat cut from the distillery-owned Glenmachrie bog, and it is what makes a Laphroaig new-make specifically a Laphroaig new-make and not a generically medicinal Islay clone.
That 20% survives, in 2026, because Bessie Williamson wrote it into a contract in 1962. Williamson was hired at Laphroaig as a three-month typist in 1934. She was left the distillery outright by the childless owner Ian Hunter in his will in 1954. In 1962 she sold one-third of the company to Seager Evans & Co (a Long John / Schenley subsidiary) and remained as managing director. She sold the remaining two-thirds in 1967 and stayed on as MD until 1972. Across those ten years of stepwise acquisition she negotiated the operating-autonomy clauses that kept the floor maltings running, the Glenmachrie peat cutting, and the specific medicinal profile that Long John’s blending team would otherwise have had every commercial reason to standardise into cheaper submission.
Laphroaig has changed corporate parents five times since Williamson retired: Whitbread, Allied Domecq, Fortune Brands, Beam Inc., Suntory (Suntory Global Spirits, since 2024). Each rewrote the marketing. None have shut the malting floor.
The distillery manager who inherited the floor and made his peace with the still design that goes with it was John Campbell. He joined Laphroaig on the mash floor in 1994 at age nineteen, became assistant manager in 1999, and became distillery manager in 2006. He was the first Ileach, the first person actually born on Islay, to run the distillery in its two-hundred-year history. (Islay Whisky Academy on John Campbell) Campbell stayed until 2021, when he crossed to the mainland to open the new Lochlea distillery in Ayrshire. He ran Laphroaig for fifteen years, and what he protected was the shape of a Laphroaig that Williamson had preserved and Hunter had built: the long foreshot cut, the floor malt, and the ex-Maker’s Mark casks in the seawater warehouses.
There is a symmetry here that I find almost too neat. Ardbeg’s identity is protected by not touching a pipe. Laphroaig’s is protected by not shutting a room. In both cases the guardian’s most important act is a decision not to change something that predates them.
Sensory result: campfire lime vs medicine cabinet
Put them side by side, at room temperature, in tulip glasses that narrow at the top so the smoke pools where you can find it. Nose the Ardbeg first. It will tell you Islay louder than the Laphroaig will, because guaiacol is a more assertive aromatic and the higher ppm gets the microphone. Then nose the Laphroaig. You will pick up less of a smoke wall and more of a hospital corridor, iodine and old wax bandages and something faintly antiseptic. Do not skip the palate on either.
The Ardbeg on the tongue is smoke plus citrus plus salt, and it leaves. The finish is drying. Your mouth does not stay coated. That clean exit is the purifier throwing back the fat before the spirit ever gets to the cask.
The Laphroaig on the tongue is bigger, oilier, sweeter at the front (because Maker’s Mark casks give up more vanilla and salted caramel than Ardbeg’s mixed refill oak) and then it settles into a medicinal grip that lasts. You are tasting the p-cresol and phenol fractions that Ardbeg’s purifier would have sent back for a second boil. Laphroaig has no purifier, so those compounds arrive in the glass and clock in for a shift. If you are new to peat and you find Laphroaig cloying, this is why: no reflux mechanism sorting weight out of the middle cut, and a bottling strength (40%) low enough that water is not doing the lift a higher ABV would.
The two whiskies are not fighting the same fight. Ardbeg is the answer to how do you keep a huge smoke while dropping the oil. Laphroaig is the answer to how do you keep the medicinal weight even at a modest ABV and a modest ppm. Both answers are correct for the question each distillery decided to ask.

Next time you pour them
Buy both. They are the two cheapest tickets into understanding how much of Islay is built into the stillhouse rather than the ppm chart, and unless you already own them you are missing the easiest possible A/B test in Scotch. Pour them at room temperature. Do not add ice; the point is to hold the volatile aromatics in the glass long enough to compare them, and ice buries volatiles. If you have never done a side-by-side, try the Ardbeg first. Its bigger, brighter smoke will calibrate your nose. Then try the Laphroaig, whose profile you will now hear as heavier and less smoky and more medicinal, which is exactly what the plumbing predicts.
The one thing to pay attention to is the finish, not the nose. Anyone can make a big smoky nose; you just burn more peat. The interesting question is what happens after you swallow. The Ardbeg’s finish closes clean, and that is the purifier. The Laphroaig’s finish clings, and that is the absence of one, plus every phenol compound heavier than guaiacol that a purifier would have sent back for another loop. You are tasting two different decisions made by two different people about the same shore, held for decades by successors who chose not to change them. The bottles are honest about it, if you know where to listen.
